This is an exempt, at-will, position works with other staff coordinating and implementing the association’s legislative agenda, including making recommendations to the Executive Director on staffing to assist WACO during the legislative session. He or she must maintain an excellent working relationship with legislative stakeholders, including committee staff, legislators, WACO members, and other interested associations and organizations. The position also works closely with the Executive Director and staff to ensure compliance with relevant laws, WACO policies, the directions of the Board of Trustees, and the best interests of the organization and affiliates. He or she manages the association in the absence of the Executive Director. Additional duties include supporting the annual membership meeting, Board meetings and training initiatives, and providing policy advice to the Executive Director, Board and Members.
The ideal candidate is an excellent writer and public speaker, able to clearly and succinctly communicate a message to all types of people and communicators. He or she is a problem solver, able to professionally and diplomatically advocate for a particular position while giving due consideration to the opinions of others. The Deputy Director must be well versed in all aspects of the Washington State legislative process, able to plot a successful strategy for getting legislative priorities passed and signed, and equally adept at fending off bills that are not in the best interest of the members. The position requires a thorough understanding of the operational and legal demands of the WACO affiliate offices.
